The quality of prayer is never measured by eloquence, not often by length, but always by sincerity of heart. Story One is about a father whose son suffered from violent, gruesome seizures from childhood and was unable to speak. The father encounters Jesus and pleads, “If you can do anything…help us.” Jesus’ response was, “If you can? Everything is possible for him that believes.” Then comes this father’s simple “prayer:”
“I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.”
In Mark 8, you can read about this father and son. You will not find the word “prayer,” but in one simple story, you will find what I consider an incredible, face-to-face moment of prayer between this man and Jesus: sincere desire, honest confession of weakness, and total reliance on God for healing.
What do you passionately struggle to believe in your life? Try not to overcomplicate this…ask God to help you overcome your unbelief.
Just as this father must have told the story of his son’s healing countless times, we will share stories of faith and prayer from our lives each week in the Family Times starting in July.
